Excellence Is Not Effortless

Growth + Alignment = Excellence | Excellence + Opportunity = Promotion
A colleague asked me a question a while back: "How did you do it? How did you get to where you are? It seems so effortless for you." This was someone I first met in college, and a lot has changed since then.
Let me be clear: excellence is anything but effortless. I’m grateful for my professional progress - the successes, the challenges and the lessons learned - but I still have plenty of growing to do.
In my personal and professional experience, I've learned this: growth is the key that unlocks the door to excellence; alignment is the calculated decision to walk through the door. Alignment is where our purpose, talents, values and behaviors come together. Without it, growth stays theoretical. But with it, growth becomes excellence.
We may not have (or choose to take) full control over the opportunities available to us, but we are the only ones who can pursue our own excellence - not in a position, but in capability, confidence and contribution.
Professional development, across the globe, is often treated like a box to check on a to-do list: complete a course, earn a certificate... done. But without integration and intentional application, much of that learning fades within 30, 60 or 90 days. It's like trying to fill buckets we know have gaping holes. When we approach learning this way, excellence remains out of reach.
True development requires a conscientious commitment to continuous learning, reflection, and action - all of which are within our span of control. The strongest leaders I know share this in common (among other things): they are deeply aligned and are lifelong learners who value growth in every facet of their lives. Great leaders strive for excellence - and sometimes, that leads to promotion. But promotion is simply a visible representation of success, not the definition of it.
So here’s my question: Are you ready and willing to walk through the door, even if promotion isn’t immediately on the other side?
